History
On February 18, 1959, the Vietnamese Government signed an agreement with the Chinese Government on China s assistance to Vietnam in building a Fertilizer Plant. This is a symbolic gift of the friendship of the Chinese Party and people towards the Vietnamese people.
In early 1960, the first Fertilizer Plant in Vietnam began construction on a 40-hectare plot of land in Tho Xuong Commune, 1km north of Bac Giang Town (now Tho Xuong Ward, Bac Giang City, Bac Giang Province). After 5 years of construction, the Plant was formed with a total of 130 works. On February 3, 1965, the Thermal Power Plant was inaugurated. On May 19, 1965, the Gasification Plant successfully gasified coal (produced coal gas to produce ammonia). On June 1, 1965, the Mechanical Workshop came into operation. However, the destructive war of the US imperialists left the first fertilizer bag production unfinished and delayed for another 10 years. To protect the lives of workers and state assets, the Government decided to suspend the factory s production. The Thermal Power Workshop was converted into the Ha Bac Thermal Power Plant, maintaining production to serve the economy and national defense. The Mechanical Workshop was converted into the Ha Bac Chemical Mechanical Plant, evacuated to Lang Giang and produced according to wartime tasks, and the Chemical Zone dismantled its equipment and brought it back to China.
During the two destructive wars, US aircraft attacked the Power Plant in 52 battles with thousands of tons of bombs and ammunition. The factory s self-defense force participated in 63 battles, contributing to shooting down one US aircraft and damaging several others.
In early 1973, the Factory was restored, built and expanded. On May 1, 1975, the Government merged the Ha Bac Power Plant, the Ha Bac Chemical Mechanical Plant and the Chemical workshops to establish the Ha Bac Fertilizer Factory. On December 12, 1975, the first bag of nitrogen fertilizer with the brand name Golden Rice was produced. On October 30, 1977, Deputy Prime Minister Do Muoi cut the ribbon to inaugurate the Ha Bac Fertilizer Factory, the first child of the Vietnamese nitrogen fertilizer industry.
In 1976-1983, production faced many difficulties. In 1981, the output only reached 9,000 tons of urea, equivalent to 9 of the design capacity.
On January 17, 1983, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers issued Directive 19-CP to maintain and promote the production of the Ha Bac Fertilizer Factory.
