Minera Escondida Ltda. is the operator of the world's largest mine. It produces copper concentrate by flotation of sulphide ore and cathode oxide ore by leaching and bioleaching of low grade sulphide. As for infrastructure, the company has two open pit mines (Escondida and Escondida Norte), two concentrators (Laguna Seca and Los Colorados), an electro-winning plant, two slurry pipelines, a port (Puerto Coloso) and desalination of sea water plant to supply, in part, the consumption of their operations. BHP Billiton Ltd, its parent company, is developing a project to supply water to the mine, which will have a capacity of 2,500 l/s which includes the largest desalination plant in the country.
