Indonesia’s banking sector is growing fast but remains underpenetrated compared to other large Asian economies. The biggest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has the lowest bank asset penetration ratio in the region at just 55% in 2019. A total of 110 commercial and 1,545 rural banks were operational in the country in 2019. There are just four state-run banks but these account for 40% of the system’s assets. Foreign banks and joint venture banks had a 10.4% share in bank assets. Commercial banks dominate the sector, accounting for 98% of total assets. Rural banks contributed 1.7% to assets while Islamic banks accounted for a 6.2% share. Alongside conventional lenders and Islamic banks, financial services in the country are provided by multi-finance companies, pawnshops and fintech start-ups.
