1909: Birth of the Banque du Congo Belge. As a public limited company, it carries out most of its activities in Central Africa.
In 1911, it obtained for the Belgian Congo the privilege of issue which it would keep for more than 40 years.
1960: Congo becomes a sovereign state. The Banque du Congo Belge brings its European activities to the Banque Belgo-Congolaise set up on 14 April in Brussels. The latter has been known since 1965 under the name Banque Belgolaise, a shareholder, alongside the Congolese government and private partners, of the Congolese bank known as Banque Commerciale du Congo.
For a few years it will bear the name of Banque Commerciale Zairoise.
1997-2003: The collapse of the country s economy and the long civil war forced the bank to reduce its size to a level compatible with its activities.
2004 ... Taking advantage of the improvement in the socio-political climate and the ensuing economic upturn, La Societe is redeploying its network throughout the country and adapting its sales organization to the new needs of its clientele of private individuals, SMEs, Large corporations and institutions.
The Bank is now the reference bank in the DRC, active throughout the country.
30th December 2020… Equity Group holdings Plc (EGH) has received regulatory approval to merge Equity Bank Congo (EBC) and BCDC to form a new bank. Going forward, the new bank will be known as, Equity Banque Commercial du Congo (EquityBCDC). This follows EGH's acquisition of 66.53 shareholding of BCDC from the family of George Forrest, combined with prior EGH 86.6 shareholding in EBC and an additional EBC shareholding of 7.7 acquired from KFW during the year. Post merger, EGH holds 77.5 in Equity BCDC with the remainder being held by IFC, the Government of DRC and minority shareholders.
