Inqo Investments Limited is a company located in Cape Town, South Africa. It was founded in 2001 with the belief that sustainable enterprise is crucial for reducing poverty and empowering lives in sub-Saharan Africa. Inqo began investing for social impact before the term "Impact Investing" gained popularity. As one of the early pioneers, Inqo focused on investing in South Africa's Eastern Cape, a region with high unemployment rates and a prevalence of HIV/AIDS. They aimed to prove the theory of investing for impact in this impoverished area. An economic analysis revealed limited employment options due to overgrazing and low rainfall. Ecotourism was identified as a promising opportunity to bring foreign exchange into the region. Inqo's first project was the creation of Kuzuko Game Reserve. Over six years, they purchased 22 farms and restored the land to create a 39,000 acre game reserve. The reserve is now home to over 40 endemic mammal species, including the "Big Five." In 2007, Kuzuko's Five Star luxury lodge opened to the public, employing 68 full-time staff and 12 part-time staff. Kuzuko also contributes to the local economy by creating additional employment opportunities throughout the supply chain. The Kuzuko Foundation, supported by guests, provides support to local schools and offers conservation education to children. Inspired by the transformative impact of intentional social investment, Inqo sought to find other investors to join their mission. They aimed to create meaningful social and environmental change by investing in sustainable businesses that prioritize social and environmental returns. Additionally, they aimed to make impact investments accessible to all by leveraging the growing interest in ethical investments. In 2015, Inqo Investments Ltd was listed on the London-based ISDX stock exchange, now known as the Aquis Stock Exchange (AQSE). This made it one of the first social impact investment companies that the general public could easily invest in. Since then, Inqo has built a diverse portfolio of investments that offer shareholders both financial returns and intentional social and environmental returns. They continue to seek out entrepreneurs and businesses that share their philosophy and vision.
