Microtek International Inc. was founded in October 1980 and went public in October 1988. In 1984 the company launched the world's first desktop optical black and white film scanner. In 1986 it launched the world's first desktop platform black and white scanner. In 1989 it introduced the world's first color scanner. In 1995 the company set up subsidiaries in Shanghai, Tokyo and Rotterdam.The company is principally engaged in the design, manufacture and distribution of image scanners, as well as the distribution of related computer information peripheral products. The company's scanners have several functions, including optical character recognition (OCR) function, copy function, E-mail function, fax function and print function, which are primarily used by banks, government and offices. Its computer information peripheral products are mainly medical application system integration solutions. During the year 2009, 94% of the company's revenue were from its image scanners.
