Boru Hatlari ile Petrol Tasima A.S. (BOTAS) was established ın 1974 by Turkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortakligi (TPAO) with the aim of diversification of Turkey’s energy sources, to transport crude oil according the Agreement between Iraq and Turkey. Since 1987, it was engaged in natural gas transportation and trade activities as well and has become one of the leading companies in natural gas and crude oil sectors. With the Natural Gas Usage Legislative Decree from 1990, BOTAS was given a monopoly position to the natural gas import, distribution (local distribution excluded), sales and pricing issues, in 2001 that monopoly position was ended officially and published in the Official Gazette. With that the importation of natural gas, transmission, distribution, storage, marketing, trading and exporting all related activities were allowed to other legal entities. Nowadays the company operates as one of the market players.
