The studio was created in 1964 from the animation division of Studioul Cinematografic Bucureşti (Bucharest Cinematographic Studios). Ion Popescu-Gopo was the best-known graphic artist and animator working at Animafilm, winning Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1957, with the animation movie "Gopo's Little Man".
Initially a state-owned studio, after the fall of the communist regime in 1989, Animafilm became a joint stock company, as Animafilm S.A in 1991. After the death of I.P. Gopo in 1989, the studio entered a period of decline reaching on the verge of bankruptcy in 2006. Together with Rofilm Cinematographic Studios and Sahia Film, Animafilm, which was surviving mostly from collected rents, was transferred by the end of October 2006 to AVAS, for privatization.
The Romanian State is the main owner of Animafilm by 70% stake, which is subordinated to the Culture and Cults Ministry.
