S.C. Romportmet S.A. Galati was set up on March 31, 1991 following the reorganization of S.C. Navrom Galati.
At the end of 2005, Mittal Steel took over a 78% stake in Romportmet from the American Investment Fund Broadhurst, following a deal of EUR 37.8 mn. As a result it controlled over 90% of the company as Mittal owns a stake also in Sidex Trading, another of Romportmet's shareholders.
