Electrecord was founded in 1932 by the merchant Nathan Mischonzniki, who brought equipment from Germany to Romania. Initially, the company dealt only with the multiplication of foreign discs, but, from 1937, it started to record Romanian music as well. After nationalization in 1948, Electrecord switched to vinyl records and experienced success, with large print runs and technological improvements. The 1970s and 1980s were the "glory years" for Electrecord, with production reaching 6-7 million discs annually. The company began to produce discs for overseas and switch to audio cassettes. After 1990, Electrecord went into decline due to the advent of CDs and competition, and in 2018 went into insolvency. Currently, a new team is trying to revitalize Electrecord through music reissues and service diversification, wanting to restore the company's historical prestige.
