Shougang Generacion Electrica S.A.A. is a company located in Lima, Peru. The company's thermal power plant, San Nicolás, began operating in 1963 with an initial generation group of 18,750 kW. In 1967, a second group of the same capacity was installed, followed by a third group in 1972 with a power of 25,000 kW. Since 1979, when the thermal plant was interconnected with the Centro Norte Interconnected System (SICN), only one unit has been in operation. During this time, there was an excess of generation capacity, and the energy policy focused on using hydroelectric energy instead of consuming oil. In 1981, Boiler No. 1 was taken out of service due to high repair costs and difficulties. As a result, the plant's capacity was reduced to what could be generated by units 2 and 3. In 1986, Boiler No. 2 was also taken out of service. It is important to note that from 1984 to 1992, the country experienced terrorist attacks on high-voltage towers, which made the SICN unreliable and unsafe. In response to this situation, the idea of operating the thermal plant at its full capacity was reconsidered.
