Panama Canal Railway Company was founded in 1855. The railroad construction began in 1850 with the need to take a shorter route between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean due to the California gold rush. The railroad began its operations in 1855 as the first route between the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, it was made up of a single track of 47 miles, with a train that had 22 coaches with a capacity of 60 persons each, as well as 51 freight cars and 72 flat cars. In 1998 the American companies Kansas City Southern and Mi-Jack Products won a concession to build and operate the railway for 50 years and in 2001 with an investment of $80 million dollars renewed the rail infrastructure to provide services of cargo and passengers transportation.
