Aeropuerto Internacional De Tocumen S.A. (Panama)

The Tocumen International Airport was inaugurated on June 1, 1947, by President Enrique Adolfo Jiménez Brin. It is currently used as a Cargo Terminal and covers an area of 7.2 square kilometers, located 41 meters above sea level. Due to its geographical position, the demand for air operations quickly exceeded the capacity of this terminal. It was not until 1971, with the arrival of General Omar Torrijos Herrera, that the Tocumen River was diverted from its original course for the construction of a new terminal. The new terminal was inaugurated on August 15, 1978, and the inaugural flight took place on September 5 of the same year. The Tocumen International Airport is one of the few in the region with two runways. The runway of the previous terminal is permanently used by cargo planes and private flights or can be used as an alternative runway to the main runway during times of high demand. The main runway at Tocumen is 3,050 meters long and is mainly used by commercial airlines. Until May 31, 2003, the airport was under the administration of the Civil Aeronautics Directorate (now the Civil Aeronautics Authority). Starting from June 1, 2003, a new administrative organization was created by Law No. 23 of January 29, 2003, allowing the creation of a company called Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen S.A., which currently manages the airport. This law was part of a series of laws that reorganized the entire aeronautical sector of Panama. In 2006, a significant expansion and renovation program was carried out to modernize and improve its services. The second phase of the airport's expansion included the construction of the "North Pier," which has increased the airport's capacity by 50%, allowing it to handle up to 15 million passengers per year. Tocumen is one of the most important air terminals on the continent in terms of the number of destinations and traffic. Before the global pandemic, 23 commercial airlines operated, connecting 85 destinations in 37 countries around the world. The Terminal 2, a building with avant-garde design, increases the capacity of the aeronautical complex to 54 boarding gates and 12 operational remote positions. This expansion will allow us to increase the capacity to comfortably transport up to 21 million passengers.
