Mon Desert Alma Sugar Milling produced 53,000 tonnes of sugar from 515,000 tonnes of cane, in 2002. This figure includes about 200,000 tonnes of cane from the Highlands factory area given that the latter sugar mill closed down as a result of the centralisation process in the sugar industry. The factory has a milling capacity of 180 tonnes per hour and milling operations have been automated as part of an overall cost reduction strategy. The company also uses bagasse, a by-product of sugar cane, as a power generator and exports its electricity to the national distributor.
