Baganuur Joint Stock Company is the largest coal mining company in Mongolia. It was established in 1978 and is the owner and operator of the Baganuur Coal Mine in Khentii Province. The mine is located approximately 200 kilometers east of Ulaanbaatar and has a mining area of about 530 square kilometers. Since its opening, the mine has produced approximately 75 million tonnes of coal. The Mongolian government privatized 25% of its share in the company in 1995, while retaining the remaining 75%. The coal from the Baganuur mine is used to supply the Ulaanbaatar 2, 3, and 4 power stations. In 1997, the Baganuur and Shivee-Ovoo Coal Mine Development Project was initiated to increase the production capacity of the Baganuur mine and improve the quality of coal. The project was funded by the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Phase I of the project, which focused on the rehabilitation of the Baganuur mine, was completed in May 2002, while Phase II, which involved the purchase of materials and equipment for the Shivee-Ovoo mine, was completed in March 2005.
