Macedonian Bank for Development Promotion (MBDP) was established in 1998 under the force of the Act on Establishing the MBDP. The bank is owned by the Republic of Macedonia. MBDP supports the development and export of local SMEs by offering short to medium-term working capital and equipment loans to enterprises working in the export sector and long-term loans for equipment purchase. MBDP's credit lines, all of which come from the international donor community, are extended through several local commercial banks at terms and conditions that are slightly more favorable than the commercial bank's own lending programs. In August 2009, the Macedonian government modified the law regulating the Macedonian Bank for Development Promotion so it can extend loans directly to local businesses as of 2010.
