Feni Industries, which was set up as a 100% state-owned enterprise, is among the largest ferronickel producers in Macedonia. It operates a mine and smelting plant for ferronickel in Kavadarci. In 2000, French company Societe Commerce de Metal et Minerale (SCMM) acquired 100% in the company at the amount of EUR 2.3 million. In 2005, the Swiss company BSG bought a 100% stake in Feni for EUR 10.8 million. Before the acquisition only one of the two lines of the factory was in operation and the annual capacity was 5,000 tonnes. The new owner invested in modernization of equipment and currently the factory is in full operation with annual production capacity of 16,000 tonnes. In April 2008, it became the first local company to obtain environmental license in accordance with the standards of the European Union, after the mill invested EUR 6mn in new equipment.
