The Company was created in 1974 from the will of the public authorities to build a national steel industry to create added value and employment, develop know-how, and contribute to the expansion of local technical subcontracting.
The Company specializes in the study, development, implementation, operation and direct or indirect management of steel projects as well as all industrial, commercial, financial, movable and real estate operations that may have any relation to the goals. of the present company or simply likely to favor its development.
Production started in 1984 with a 420,000 T capacity rolling mill based in Nador.
The Company operated in a highly protected environment until 1991, when imports were liberalized, with customs duties kept quite high.
Entirely privatized in 1997, and controlled today by the ONA group in collaboration with the Spanish steel group ACERALIA and other hard-core partners, it remains faithful to its basic missions while integrating the strategic orientations dictated by the imperatives of competitiveness and sustainable profitability.
The Company was created by the Moroccan State in 1974 with the ambition to set up a fully integrated steel industry from the production of ore in Ouixane (Nador) to its valuation in a blast furnace of one million tonnes. “This is how the first link of a national steel industry dedicated mainly to the construction sector was launched. The technical and economic studies carried out over many years have resulted in the opportunity of a simple rolling mill with gradual upstream integration. .
This is how the first link of a national steel industry dedicated mainly to the construction sector was launched. Production started in March 1984 with the Nador rolling mill with an initial production capacity of 420,000 tonnes gradually increased to 600,000 tonnes per year of reinforcing bars and wire rod.
In 1996, La Compagnie introduced 35 of its capital on the stock market and, in 1997, the State sold 62 of the capital to a consortium of institutional investors led by the SNI.
To cope with new market constraints and the imperatives of competitiveness, La Compagnie started in July 2002, a new rolling mill at Jorf Lasfar with an annual production capacity of around 400,000 tonnes per year.
In 2003, La Compagnie embarked on an ambitious project to build an electric steelworks at Jorf Lasfar, which started in August 2005 and is responsible for the production of billet, the raw material for the two rolling mills.
Also in 2005, La Compagnie carried out a capital increase in Longometal Armatures, an activity initially developed within Longometal Africa, bringing its stake to 92 . In March 2006, taking into account the movements of concentrations which animate the international scene, SNI, Arcelor and the main shareholders Sonasid concluded a strategic partnership for the development of the company. The objective is to consolidate and develop Sonasid s position on the Moroccan market and allow it to benefit from the transfer of technology and skills from Arcelor in the long products sector. A strategic alliance for Sonasid, which is backed by a large European operator with the ambition to strengthen the company s production. A few months later, in June 2006, the merger between Arcelor and Mittal Steel gave birth to the No. 1 in steel: the ArcelorMittal Group.
