Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. (WNL) is a media company located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was established in 1980 and initially started with two Sinhala weeklies, "Sirikatha" and "Wijeya," targeting women and children respectively. In 1983, they introduced another Sinhala weekly called "Tharunaya" for young men. WNL also launched an English women's journal called "Lanka Woman." The company became the first Sri Lankan publisher to install a web-fed offset press, enabling high-quality color printing. In 1986, WNL expanded its publishing activities by acquiring several newspaper titles from the defunct Times of Ceylon Ltd. They introduced two Sunday newspapers, the Sunday Lankadeepa in February 1986 and the Sunday Times in June 1987. These publications offered new concepts, styles, and formats, filling a void for bold and independent newspapers with attractive presentations. The success of these Sunday newspapers led to the launch of WNL's first daily newspaper, the "Daily Lankadeepa," in 1991. It has since become the most popular Sinhala daily newspaper in Sri Lanka. WNL's vision is to be the most independent and socially responsible media group in Sri Lanka, upholding freedom of expression and protecting individual rights through journalistic excellence. Their mission is to provide timely and comprehensive information to everyone, regardless of their location. They aim to report facts objectively while presenting a wide range of views to keep readers informed and help them form opinions. WNL also provides a platform for public discussions on important and interesting issues. They believe that knowledge and information are essential for social equality and strive to connect with the younger generation.
