Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) is a major coal producing company in India. It was established in 1992 and is one of the eight subsidiaries of Coal India Limited. The company is headquartered in Sambalpur and has coal mines located across Odisha. MCL operates seven open cast mines and three underground mines. MCL has two subsidiaries, MJSJ Coal Limited and MNH Shakti Ltd, which are joint ventures with private companies. The company has a total of 45 sanctioned mining projects with a coal capacity of 190.83 million tons per year. The capital investment for these projects is ₹6,076.78 crore (US$760 million). Out of the 45 projects, 28 have been completed with a capacity of 73.98 million tons per year and a capital investment of ₹2,348.61 crore (US$290 million). Two of the completed projects, Balanda OCP and Basundhara-East OCP, have been exhausted. The Lajkura Expn. project with a capacity of 2.50 million tons per year is expected to be approved soon. The approval for the Garjanbahal OCP project with a capacity of 10.00 million tons per year has been temporarily stalled due to delays in obtaining forestry clearance. Seventeen ongoing projects, including Kulda OCP, Bhubaneswari OCP, and Kaniha OCP, with a total capital investment of ₹3,728.17 crore (US$470 million), are currently under implementation.
