The Instituto Nacional de Electrificacion (INDE) S.A. is a state entity located in Guatemala City. It was created on May 27, 1959, under decree number 1,287 of the Congress of the Republic. INDE operates autonomously and has its own functional autonomy, legal personality, and the ability to acquire rights and obligations within its jurisdiction. It is currently governed by its Organic Law, decree 64-94, and the General Electricity Law. INDE's main functions include the generation, transmission, and commercialization of electric energy. In 1999, the institution underwent a separation of functions, resulting in the creation of separate entities for electricity generation, transmission and control, and electricity distribution in the eastern and western regions of the country.
