Ingenio Taboga S.A. (Filadelfia de Guanacaste) (Costa Rica)

Ingenio Taboga S.A. is an agro-industry located in Filadelfia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The company is known for being one of the country's main producers of conventional, organic, and flavored sugars, electricity, alcohol, rice, and protein for animal feed. With over 750 employees, Ingenio Taboga is committed to efficiently producing and transforming crops into value-added products. The history of the company dates back to 1916 when Julio Sánchez Lépiz established the 'Hacienda Taboga' livestock project in Bebedero, Cañas. Together with his wife, Emilia Cortés, they built one of the most important livestock companies of that time. Despite the challenges posed by changing markets, their eight children successfully competed with the sugar cane production of the Central Valley without abandoning the livestock activity. In 1958, the Sánchez Cortés family established the 'Central Azucarera Taboga' and two years later, in 1960, the first sugar harvest took place, producing 1144 -50kg packages. In 1974, the BNR investment group joined the Sánchez family to establish Ingenio Taboga, which led to the growth in land and mill capacity. Taboga implemented a strategy to diversify and strengthen its operation. In the mid-80s, the company started operating an alcohol distillery, and in 1995, it became the first sugar factory to export 1 million 50kg bags of sugar. The production of alcohol was doubled in 2007-2008 using new technology, and in 2009, the production of bioethanol began. In 2015, a new production line for protein production was created, and in 2016, Taboga started producing specialty sugars like demerara. In 2020, a new craft distillery was inaugurated, and in 2021, Taboga launched Alcotab, their own brand of sanitary products for the local market.
