This deposit was found in 1996, but it was only acquired by BHP Billiton in 2004. Until March 31, 2006, the company was in the development stage and focused its activities on the construction and commissioning of its mining project, located in Region II of Chile which is currently in operations. The company commenced the extraction and sale of minerals on January 1, 2007. Minera Spence produces copper cathodes through its mining operations conducted on an open pit and the treatment of minerals in the plant located in the mine site which includes bacterial leaching, solvent extraction, and electro winning. Cathodes are transported by train to the Mejillones port where they are shipped for delivery to customers.
