Cia Portuaria Mejillones S.A., located in Santiago, is a privately held corporation that was formed on November 3, 1999. They won a tender to construct and operate Terminal 1 in Mejillones, Antofagasta Region, for a 30-year period, extendable to 40 years. Puerto Angamos, a subsidiary of Cia Portuaria Mejillones S.A., began directly operating the terminal in 2003. They received the Construction Completion Certificate on November 10, 2003, and started operating their initial three berths. The construction of the fourth berth was completed in 2004. In May 2005, the Maritime Authority authorized Complejo Portuario Mejillones S.A. to lease the maritime concession to Puerto Angamos. In July 2005, Puerto Angamos secured a syndicated bank loan facility with BCI and Corpbanca for up to US$62.5 million. This loan was used to repay a long-term loan received from the International Development Bank in 2002 and to issue annual performance guarantees to Complejo Portuario Mejillones S.A. In December, Cia Portuaria Mejillones S.A. achieved a new operational milestone by transferring over two million tons of bulk. This was made possible by the implementation of an innovative mineral shipment system using flip-up containers and the arrival of new customers. These improvements have positioned the company as a sustainable platform for logistics operations in the northern macrozone of the country.
