Coelce was created in August 1971 by the merger between CONEFOR, CELCA, CENORTE and CERNE, companies responsible for producing, transmitting and distributing of electrical energy to the Ceara state. In the 90's , the company became an open capital company and its capital started to be negotiated on the major Brazilian stock exchange. In April 1998, the concessionaire was privatized by a public auction. Nowadays, the company is controlled by Endesa Espanha, which owns 59% of the company - 2.3% directly through Endesa Internacional and 56,6% thru Investluz S/A, formed by Endesa Internacional, Ampla (former CERJ), Chilectra and Enersis. Coelce is responsible to provide energy for an area of 146,817 Km², which encloses 184 cities.
