One of Bulgaria's largest timber processing firms Welde Bulgaria, former Lesoplast, was established in 1936. The company, based in the central town of Troyan, produces raw and filmfaced plywood and hardboard. Welde Bulgaria exports some 70% of its production. The company operates two plants abroad - in Serbia and Romania and a warehouse, located in Bulgaria`s second largest city - Plovdiv.
In July 1997, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold 24.4% of Lesoplast to Austria-based joint stock company Welde for USD 1.1 million. Welde, which manufactures and trades in plywood and hardboard, acquired a majority stake in the company in 1999.
