Bulgaria's car tyre maker Vidachim was constructed and launched into operation in the period 1965-1969. Vidachim – based in the Danube port of Vidin – operates its own chemical laboratory, railway station, thermal power plant. The company produces a wide range of tyres, such as - industrial tyres and tyres for lifting, agricultural, construction and other machinery and equipment, tyres for light commercial vehicles and trailers.
The plant held almost 100% of the local market for car and truck tyres before the fall of the country's communist regime in 1989. However, it lost market share over the 1990s as its outdated production technology failed to compete with an influx of cheaper and better imports.
Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency tried to sell up to 57% of the tyre maker in October 1998 but the stake failed to attract bidders. Vidachim was declared insolvent in June 2001 after being idle for nearly four years.
In July 2002, local construction and investment company Pristis Group bought 70% in Vidachim for the token price of BGN 1.0, pledging to cover BGN 68.9 million of the company's debt. The new majority owner also vowed to invest BGN 13.1 million in the company over a five-year period.
The listed company resumed tyre manufacturing in August 2005.
