Bobov Dol is a thermal power plant, located near the city and the mines of Bobov Dol, district of Kyustendil, Bulgaria. The plant has 3 electricity units which were brought into use in the years between 1973 and 1975. TPP Bobov Dol produces electricity and heat by burning lignite and brown coals.
TPP Bobov Dol spun off from state-owned power utility NEK in 2000. The State had to shut down one of the power units of the plant after January 2007, when Bulgaria became a full member of the European Union. As of mid-2008 the State, represented by the Ministry of Economy and Energy was a sole owner of the power facility. In June 2008 the Privatization agency started a bidding procedure for the privatization of TPP Bobov Dol. Consortium Energy MK and Mining Company were the only two bidding companies, both owned by the local energy magnate Hristo Kovachki. The Consortium acquired full stake of the electricity company at the issued price of BGN 100 million. Mining Company dropped out of the bid due to incomplete documents. Consortium Energy MK consists of several mines, all of them owned by Mr. Kovachki.
In March 2009 TPP Bobov Dol established a new affiliate company – Energoremont Bobov Dol with the exclusive primary activity of technical support. More than 300 workers of over 900 employees of TPP Bobov Dol were moved to the new subsidiary.
