Sofia BT, established in 1909 and nationalized in 1947, is a subsidiary of Bulgartabak Holding and its main activity is production of cigarettes.
In mid-2004, it was slated for sale together with the three other most profitable cigarette factories of Bulgartabak. British American Tobacco has offered to buy the package comprising the majority state stakes in Sofia BT and Bulgartabak's plant in Plovdiv. However, the sale collapsed when in February 2005 the sole bidder withdrew a EUR 200 million offer for the company's three best-performing factories – in Sofia, Plovdiv and Blagoevgrad. BAT explained the pull-out with the difficult political environment in Bulgaria.
Sofia BT manufactures and sells around 10 billion cigarettes per year. The annual capacity of the factory, which spans over 26,000 square meters, is 16 billion pieces of cigarettes. The company exports around 80% of its production abroad.
