Nu Boyana Film, established in 1962, is among the few film making studios in Europe that combines at one site all the necessary facilities for a full production cycle. It provides complete services and facilities for film, TV programmes and commercials pre-production, production and post-production.
The film centre has three main units - a film production division, a film lab division and an animation division. It spans over 100 hectares some 8.0 kilometres off the centre of the capital Sofia. Nu Boyana Film used to roll out about 20 feature films and another 20 television films a year but after the collapse of the communist regime in 1989 it remained largely idle as Bulgaria's film industry fell apart. About 60% of the company revenues over the past ten years come from foreign film productions.
Four foreign firms filed in November 2004 preliminary bids for the purchase of 95% of Boyana Film, which has been slated for sale since 1999. The bidders included British Ealing Studios and Dragon Studios, U.S. movie production company Nu Image and German Bavaria Film. In June 2005, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency picked Nu Image's wholly-owned Bulgarian unit as buyer of 95% of Boyana film studios. Nu Image offered the highest price of BGN 12.2 million and pledged to invest another BGN 30.5 million to upgrade Boyana's movie-making facilities. Under the sell-off deal, the U.S. company must keep the core activity of the film making studios for 20 years and is banned from transactions involving the studios land for 20 years.
Nu Boyana Film has serviced hundreds of feature films, including big-budget movies like Criminal, The Expendables 1, 2 and 3, London Has Fallen, 300: The The Rise Of An Empire, The Black Dahlia, Killing Season, Conan, The Way Back and Kon-Tiki.
