Plovdiv BT, established after the nationalisation in 1947, is a subsidiary of Bulgartabac Holding until 2008 and its main activity is production of cigarettes. It was slated for sale in late 2004 when it was grouped in a sell-off package with Bulgartabac's plant in Sofia. British American Tobacco (BAT) offered to buy the package comprising the majority state stakes in both firms.BAT later offered EUR 200 million for Bulgartabac's three best-performing factories – in Sofia, Plovdiv and Blagoevgrad. However, the sell-off collapsed in February 2005 as the sole bidder withdrew its offer citing difficult political environment in Bulgaria.
In 2008 Bulgartabak Holding sold 78% of its subsidiary to the local company Sigma Consulting for BGN 30.8 million (EUR 15.7 million).
In August 2009, Cigarette Factory Plovdiv changed its name to King's Tobacco. As of end-2009, Sigma Consulting acquire full stake in King's Tobacco. In 2013 its renamed to King's Tobacco International and in 2015 - to KT International.
