Holcim Bulgaria AD, formerly Beloizvorski Cement, is a unit of world's leading supplier of cement, aggregates and concrete - LafargeHolcim Group. The local unit is engaged in the manufacture of cement, sand, gravel and crushed stone and ready-mix concrete. Through its subsidiaries, it operates sevarl pits and quarries, located near the towns of Sofia and Plovdiv.
In 1997, Bulgaria's government sold 51% of Beloizvorski Cement plant to Swiss building materials group Holderbank Financiere Glarus AG for USD 32.5 million. Bulgaria retained a 49% stake in Beloizvorski Cement. In 1998, the Swiss group raised its stake by buying 12.8% from Beloizvorski's employees and 1.5% from the former owners of the land where the plant was built. In April 2001, Holderbank raised its stake in the cement plant to 92.5%, buying 27.3% from the state. In mid-2002, Beloizvorski Cement was renamed into Holcim Bulgaria.
