Bulgarian cables and conductors producer Emka, which was established in 1936, is based in the northern town of Sevlievo. The company's product range features cables and cords, winding wires and PVC compounds for cable production. Emka exports over 70% of its output, mainly to EU member states.
A 48% stake in Emka was sold against vouchers under the government's mass privatisation programme in 1996-97. Most of the shares were acquired by local diversified company Industrial Capital Holding. In April 1999, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold a 38.73% stake in the cable maker to management-employee buyout company Kemp AD for USD 1.3 million. A 6.6% of the remaining equity was offered at preferential prices to the company's employees and 4.0% was set aside to meet property claims by former pre-communist owners.
