Bulgaria's corrugated board and packaging manufacturer Dunapack Rodina was founded in 1962 as the biggest corrugated board manufacturer on the Balkans. The company, which is based in the country's second-largest city of Plovdiv, held a 17% share of the domestic corrugated paper market in 2004.
In June 1996, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold a 70% stake in the Rodina paper mill to local company Rodinvest for USD 5.02 million. The Plovdiv-based buyer pledged to invest USD 3.52 million in the plant over the next five years. Of the remaining equity, 20% were distributed to the firm's employees at preferential prices and 10% were set aside to meet property restitution claims. In December 2000, the EU-EBRD Bulgarian Post-Privatisation Fund (BPPF) bought 46.6% in the company against an all-equity investment of BGN 4.0 million. The funds, invested via a capital hike of Rodinvest, were used to increase the working capital and redirect Rodina focus to customer oriented products instead of transport packaging. In September 2002, Hungarian packaging company Dunapack acquired 98.08% of Rodinvest, which in turn controlled 91.35% of the paper mill. The new owner, part of Austrian Hamburger Group, pledged to invest over EUR 16 million in the company by 2004.
It is claimed that the market share of the company in the Bulgarian sector of packaging production is 34%.
