CERATIZIT Bulgaria is a fully-owned subsidiary of Luxembourg-based CERATIZIT GmbH, one of the world's biggest hard-metal suppliers.
CERATIZIT is a legal successor of Bulgaria's machine tool maker Instrument, which is based in the central town of Gabrovo.
In July 1996, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold 75% of Instrument to Austria's Planzee Tizit GmbH for DEM 6.0 million.
The new owner pledged to invest DEM 1.5 million in the plant, which also produced measurement equipment and woodworking machines, in the next three years.
Of the remaining 25% of Instrument, 20% were offered to employees at a preferential price and 5.0% was kept for covering property claims by former pre-communist owners. The company was renamed into CERATIZIT Bulgaria after the December 2002 merger between Plansee Tizit and Luxembourg-based Cerametal.
