Bulgaria's thermal power plant and briquette producer Brikel is located in the Maritsa East coal mining complex in southern Bulgaria. It was incorporated in 2000 after thermal power plant Maritsa East I and local "Briketna Fabrika EAD" merged to form the Brikel joint stock company.
In July 2004, Bulgaria's Privatization Agency sold 100% of the briquette producer to local trade and construction company Kalista-2004 for EUR 14.9 million. The buyer, controlled by local businessman Hristo Kovachki, has pledged to keep its stake above 75% for at least five years after the sale. In 2010 Seychelles-based Moler Corp acquired a 100% stake in the company.
The main activity of Brikel is generation of electricity and heat and manufacture of briquettes. The annual production capacity of the company is 1.05 million tonnes of briquette and 1,350 million kWh.
