The Bank was incorporated in Bangladesh as a Public Limited Company on May 11, 1999 under the Companies Act, and commenced commercial operation on June 3, 1999.
The Bank was listed on Dhaka Stock Exchange on January 1, 2003 and Chittagong Stock Exchange on November 17, 2003.
The Bank is engaged in encompassing a wide range of services including accepting deposits, making loans, discounting bills, conducting money transfer and foreign exchange transactions and performing other related services, such as safe keeping, collections, issuing guarantees, acceptances and letters of credit.
The principal activities of the bank are to provide all kinds of commercial banking services to its customers through its branches SME branches, such as innovate and sell financial products and services, cross border trade services, grow, develop and maintain client relationship, attract and manage investment, create brand awareness and commit to social and environmental responsibilites.
The Bank operates Islamic banking in two branches designated for this purpose in complying with the rules of Islamic shari a. A separate balance sheet and income statement are presented as recommended by the Central Shari a Board for Islamic Banking in Bangladesh.
In 2021, the bank activities are transferred from conventional banking to Islamic banking.
The Bank name was changed from Standard Bank Limited into Standard Bank PLC with effect from January 16, 2024.
