Azerbaijan Railways CSJC, also known as ADY, is the national rail transport operator in Azerbaijan. In 1878 was started laying of the first railway in Azerbaijan, Baku - Surakhani – Sabunchu line, with the length of 20 km. Construction was completed in Jan 20, 1880 - the date of creation of the railway in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan and South Caucasus Railways were merged under the name Trans-Caucasian railway ifor the periods from 1953 to 1955 and from 1963 to 1967. Since 1967 up to now Azerbaijan railways operates as an independent railway. In 1995 was established Azerbaijan State Railway and it was transformed to closed joint-stock company on July 20, 2009. The structure of the company consists of Department of Freight Carriages, Department of Infrastructure, Department of Passenger Services, Department for repair and construction of railways and technical facilities. The main activities are railway of freight, passenger, baggage and mail carriages.
