Banco de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, located in Buenos Aires, was established on May 23, 1878, under the name "Monte de Piedad de la Provincia de Buenos Aires." Inspired by the Montepíos of 14th century Europe, its main objective was to combat usury by providing loans against various pledged objects at a lower interest rate than the market. The bank's founding purpose was to assist residents with limited resources in meeting their financial needs, making it the first official pawnshop in the city.
